| The THERMOMASS Building Insulation
System helped the Mecklenburg County Jail become a secure, energy
efficient facility. With the durable, rugged interior and exterior
finishes of the insulated concrete walls, this correctional facility
provides the strength and integrity needed in a justice center without
compromising thermal performance or its aesthetic quality.
Phase I, consisting of 1,004 secure beds, was completed
in December 1996. The housing pods are organized horizontally around
a circulation spine and vertically by the stacking of cells and
dayrooms. Arrest processing, public reception, administrative and
medical treatment areas occupy the lower three floors.
